Life-long security professional Samuel Griffin III spent two-and-a-half decades growing his Virginia-based security and executive protection agency into a fully staffed enterprise servicing Fortune 500 companies, heads of state, and A-list celebrities. To help guide those interested in entering security or revamping a professional career, Griffin wrote “Rent-A-Cop Reboot: A Security Pro’s Lessons that Could Save Your Career, Your Butt, and Even Your Life” in October 2020.
The same day the book was published, he was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer after a routine colonoscopy.
“As a business owner, I had always believed in having a Plan B – but this diagnosis brought on a slew of emotions as reality settled in,” Griffin said. “Although we have backup plans, those plans can become temporarily derailed while waiting on them to kick in.”
According to the American Cancer Society, in the U.S., colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women. African Americans are about 20% more likely to be diagnosed with the disease but have a mortality rate that is close to 40% higher than other racial or ethnic groups.
Beginning treatment just before Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March, Griffin said he’s hopeful that telling his story can help others understand the importance of early detection and offer encouragement for staying up-to-date with regular colon health screenings.
An avid blogger (“Rent-A-Cop Reboot” developed from company blog posts he wrote offering advice on staying safe and how to keep well-being in mind – especially during the Covid-19 pandemic), Griffin said he plans to write throughout treatment when he can. A recent essay he penned about his diagnosis is included with this release.
As a child who grew up in a home destabilized by violence, Griffin has always drawn on his family and his faith for strength during difficult days.
“Although I am dealing with colon cancer, I am reminded that my God makes no mistakes. God’s timing is always perfect and His ways are not always our ways,” he said. “With my wife, Imani, and daughter, Bella, by my side, I have faith that I will survive colon cancer and that the doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center will help me beat this disease.”
